C4, 9pm – The Truth About Amazon: How It Took Over The World

More than 90% of British shoppers use Amazon. This episode tells the story of how the retail giant took on its rivals and won; and the way Amazon keeps winning, setting the rules everyone else must follow. Sabrina Grant and Helen Skelton investigate how Amazon has used its might to out-muscle everyone from eBay to Etsy. Speaking to senior executives who spent their careers inside Amazon, they explore how the online giant uses extraordinary resources of data and money to take on, and take over, one sector of the retail economy after another, leaving traditional high street players in its wake. Sabrina and Helen examine the way Amazon is taking on Google as the gateway to the internet, and explore Amazon's latest expansion as it tries to replace supermarkets as the main force in British online grocery retailing. The Truth About Amazon: How It Took Over the World asks the two most important questions for British shoppers in 2020: what does Amazon have in store for us next? And should we be worried?

C4, 6.30pm – Jungle Mystery: Lost Kingdoms of the Amazon (E1)

Archaeologist and explorer Ella al-Shamahi sets out on a mission to solve one of the world's ancient mysteries: did giant cities and civilisations once flourish in the Amazon rainforest? The first European explorers to sail the Amazon in the 16th century wrote of giant glistening cities and vast organised armies with populations of thousands. But later expeditions saw no more than a few tribes scattered through the jungle - and dismissed the earlier accounts. Now archaeologists in South America are making astonishing discoveries. Using new technologies that can 'see through the trees', evidence is emerging of sophisticated ancient civilisations and cities that once thrived right across the Amazon basin. From the flat plains of Bolivia to the forests of central Brazil, new evidence suggests that the 16th-century story may have been right after all, a fact of vital importance to the ancestors of those original city communities who are being forcefully removed from their homes. In this episode, Ella lands in the jungle of Brazil where archaeologists are investigating mysterious geometric shapes that have been revealed in the landscape by extensive deforestation. Ella helps to discover a vast previously unknown ancient settlement. She also joins an indigenous community for whom this past is essential to establishing their land rights today and helps them prove once and for all that this land has been theirs for centuries.

C4, 8pm – Jamie: Keep Cooking at Christmas (E1/2)

Jamie Oliver and his family invite us to get into the Christmas spirit as they prepare for their own family celebrations, offering us a helpful guide to the whole festive season. From creating edible presents for those who we can't meet in person and ideas for a gorgeous Christmas dinner with our more immediate family to ways of reinventing leftovers, Jamie has loads of handy hints and tips for a bespoke Christmas 2020 as we navigate such unprecedented times. In the first part of this two-part special, Jamie looks at ways to make cracking Christmas gifts to share with our loved ones. We might not be able to sit around a table all together as normal this year, but that doesn't mean we can't share gorgeous festive food, starting with a sumptuous roasted mulled wine ham that's cooked and glazed in all the flavours of Christmas. Accompanied by cheeses you can flavour and deliver ready to be baked, it's the perfect gift for those who we might be missing this year. Jamie and the children also create the ultimate yule log for their grandparents. For the big day itself, Jamie's been thinking about ways to plan ahead, even if we're not yet sure how many people we'll be cooking for. Whether you've bought a turkey crown or the whole bird, Jamie shows us how we can make a beautiful sage, onion and apricot stuffing that that can be rolled and placed in the oven at the same time or saved for another day. Served with a simple but phenomenal chestnut gravy, and with a lesson in the best way to layer flavour with your veg, this is a Christmas dinner that's perfect for whatever we need this year.
