Our response to the DCMS consultation

Our response to the announcement by DCMS that it is launching a consultation into the future of Channel 4.

Majestic 1

Channel 4 is a broadcaster with public service at its core – owned by the British public and focused on generating economic, cultural and social impact in all corners of the UK, at no cost to the taxpayer. Over almost 40 years we’ve invested £12billion in UK produced programmes, fuelling our world-beating production sector and impacting lives for the better through content like It’s A Sin, the Paralympics, Dispatches and Gogglebox.

Supporting small businesses is in our DNA – and with our new bases in Leeds, Bristol, Glasgow and Manchester we are helping rebalance the UK’s creative economy across all parts of the UK – spending over half of our programming budget with producers outside London and our investment in skills and training bringing young people from all walks of life into TV.

‘Our focus is on maximising our impact for British audience and the UK economy. Evidence has consistently shown that our model of public ownership and commercial funding is a highly effective means of delivering this and, with market leading growth in streaming and digital revenues, is well placed to continue to do so over the long term. We look forward to playing our part in the consultation.
